2010 Atomic 24hr Adventure Race Results

Team Applied VitalsTeam Applied Vitals competed in the 2010 Atomic AR, a 24 hour adventure race in the southern Appalachian range of north Georgia.

The race started at 7am on Saturday May 15 and we finished just before noon the next day – for just over 28 hours of racing.  Broken into two stages, there was a break that brought all the teams back together for a midnight start on Sunday.

The total mileage, if your navigation was flawless, was around 110 miles.  There was several thousand feet of vertical change over the course, with one contiguous 1000 foot climb on the bike over 5 miles.

We made one major error in the race, a “creative” bushwhack approach to checkpoint 4 on day one that I believe set us up for a very difficult remainder of the race. For an hour and half we drug our bikes through the woods, narrowly avoiding a coiled rattlesnake, splitting an elbow wide open on a rock and reaching absolute exhaustion within the first 4 hours of the race.

  1. Kudos, to racing your first 24. This is Will R. I was the other solo racer (besides Jason) you met at Swamp Fox. I remembered my first 24 it was a blast… Outside of running 5 miles in bike shoes. But that was part of the adventure I guess. Anyways man, shoot me an e-mail if you are interested in some training. I won a lottery slot to Ironman Hawaii so I am looking for someone crazy enough to do some distance running, and maybe some paddling/swimming to break up the monotany of triathlon training. I might even do a few AR’s this fall after Hawaii.

  2. Will – great to hear from you! I’m your man. I was actually planing on taking on an Ironman regimen to boost my endurance. Perfect timing.

If I recall correctly, you described your first Ironman as both your first marathon run and century ride. I like your style.
