Training For 24hr Adventure Race

Adventure race traingWe’re a little over one month out from Atomic AR, a 24hr adventure race set in the hills of northern GA. In preparation, my racing partner, Jason Ferro, and I staged a mock adventure race training session, complete with plotting, riding, running, night navigation and the usual discomforts.

The Full Dress Rehearsal

Earlier in the week, Jason planted checkpoints in the Francis Marion National Forest, recording GPS coordinates for each.

Fully geared up, like we were headed to the start of a race, we got together just before sundown to plot coordinates and do a final gear check.

What we anticipated to take about 4hrs ended up being a 6hr & 17min training session.  It was worth every minute. We tested out some new gear and found some that needed to be replaced.

Perhaps the biggest benefit was putting in the time to work together as a team, getting in sync with communication and timing while we’re both uncomfortable, cold, in the dark and quite tired as the clock rolled past 2am.
